The bottom guards are recommended in general applications where rocks and other damage causing impediments are typically located below the drive lines. Additionally, fully enclosing the drive lines in general applications can cause soil and other fine material to build up inside the enclosure. A full enclosure (bottom + top guards) is primarily recommended for applications like mulching and brush cutting where tree branches and other impediments can contact the drive lines from below or above.
